Six Things I HATE about Thailand!

Yes, it was I who decided to move here in the first place, so I really shouldn't complain. But I'm an American -- I'm supposed to complain! Oh yeah -- I'm sure I can up with 4 more to make 10, but I'm being lazy.

  • SIX - Materialism. Yeah, my mom's real sick, my little brother can't go to school because we can't pay his paltry tuition, and I haven't eaten all day. But can you buy me that 100,000 Baht gold necklace so I can show off to all my friends that I have a farang (read "white") boyfriend that can buy me expensive stuff.
  • FIVE - Photophobia. I really hate walking down a crowded sidewalk on a hot sunny day, having to dodge f***'n UMBRELLAS to avoid getting stabbed in the eyes, all due to some silly Asian obsession with "whiteness".
  • FOUR - Lies. There can't POSSIBLY be that many sick water buffaloes, mothers, aunts, babies, etc., that you have take care of. But when your sweet little Thai girlfriend comes to you with tears in her eyes, you just can't help asking yourself, "So ... who's sick this time?"
  • THREE - Corruption. Are these people really THAT stupid to allow crooked politicians to get away with ripping off their own citizens?!!?
  • TWO - The FAKE smiles once they find out you're American -- you have money that THEY want.
  • ONE - HAGGLING!!!! If you want me to BUY something from you, just tell me the DAMN PRICE and let ME decide if I want it or not! No guessing games!!!!

Top Eight Blackjack Myths That WILL Lose You Money!

Okay, I know this is supposed to be a top TEN list, but I can't think of two more that are good enough to put here.

  • Myth 8: Don't split 9, 9 against the dealer's 9
  • Myth 7: The deuce (2) is the most favorable card for the dealer
  • Myth 6: The dealer has won ten hands consecutively - you will win soon.
  • Myth 5: People entering in the middle of a shoe can cause you to lose
  • Myth 4: The dealer is HOT
  • Myth 3: Always take insurance if you have a blackjack
  • Myth 2: Bad players cause you to lose
  • Myth 1: The aim of blackjack is to get as close to 21 as possible

Top Ten "Freebies" on the Net

Do these offers really work? Well, there are people who SWEAR by them. And, considering the fact that these offers are affiliated with some big name companies, I'm leaning toward trying them out!

Top Ten Popular Countries for Mail Order Brides

Mail order brides? Yes, you read it right. There is no rhyme or reason for a Justin Timberlake to fly to Belarus to look for a beautiful woman when thousands of sexy American girls throw their panties at him on the stage. Guys who fly overseas to pick up chicks do so because they perceive themselves to be too damned hideous to score the "hot Barbie dolls" in America. They keep losing out to hunky Ken, yet they still don't get the message and refuse to lower their standards. Hence, with no hot young American girls giving them any attention, Ugly Otto goes to Russia with the hopes that Sexy Olga would be interested in them since Ugly Otto has more money than poor Sergei. Okay, this may be a bit harsh, but fact is, the Mail-Order-Bride industry is running strong. Here is my take on the most popular Mail Order Bride countries:

  • TEN - Lithuania
  • NINE - Latvia
  • EIGHT - Romania
  • SEVEN - Poland
  • SIX - Philippines
  • FIVE - Belarus
  • FOUR - Viet Nam
  • THREE - Thailand
  • TWO - Ukraine
  • ONE - Russia

Top Ten Countries Spending on Computer Games

This one is spending on computer games or video gaming consoles, etc., per capita, as the U.S. easily tops the over-all video game spending list by a huge margin. Oh yeah -- this does NOT take into account all the PIRATED games bought all over the world. My guess is the top spenders in that category would be all in Asia. The numbers represent the spending on video games per person in US$.

  • Canada - 56.1
  • USA - 52.1
  • UK - 44.6
  • Japan - 32.7
  • Germany - 21.1
  • South Korea - 20.9
  • Italy - 16.5
  • Sweden - 12.7
  • Australia - 11.4
  • France - 9.7

The World's Top Ten Amusement Parks

In terms of quality, I tend to not agree with this list. However, the list is based on turnstile numbers at the amusement parks around the world. Personally, I think Cedar Point in Sandusky, OH, is the best amusement park in the world. But, then again – I LOVE roller coasters. It is surprising that Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey outranked even Magic Mountain in California. Well, here they are, in ALPHABETICAL ORDER:

  • Alton Towers - Staffordshire, England
  • Busch Gardens - Tampa Bay, Florida, USA
  • Disneyland Park - Anaheim, California, USA
  • Europa Park Rust - Germany
  • Gardaland - Castelnuovo, Italy
  • Liseberg - Gothenburg, Sweden
  • Lotte World - Seoul, South Korea
  • Port Aventura - Salou, Spain
  • Six Flags Great Adventure - Jackson, New Jersey, USA
  • Tivoli Gardens - Copenhagen, Denmark

Top Ten Reasons to NOT Teach in Thailand

Thinking of teaching in Thailand? Here are some reasons that might give you second thoughts!

  • TEN - All the modern conveniences of home -- at TWICE (or more) the amount local Thais have to pay. Why? Because you're white and the impression is you're rich (even if you might not be).
  • NINE - Cheap food that you have to pay TWICE as much (or more)the amount local Thais have to pay. Why? Because you're white and the impression is you're rich (even if you might not be).
  • EIGHT - If you're NOT a certified teacher (just a white face that can speak English), consider yourself lucky if you land a job paying 30,000 Baht/mo. You'll be living in a 30 sq.m. box, drinking cheap Beer Chang, and envying the real teachers at international schools making 3 or 4 times more than you.
  • SEVEN - The choking pollution -- okay, primarily in Bangkok. But hey, that's where a lot of the jobs are.
  • SIX - Anonymity. Yes, nobody knows you, and nobody could give a rat's ass if something bad happens to you.
  • FIVE - The weather. According to meteorologists, Bangkok has the lowest, year-round temperature variation among all world capitals. Typically, lows are in the mid-20's and highs in the lower to mid 30's. Okay, this could be a good thing -- unless you have to teach 6 hours straight with no AC and a fan that works just half the time.
  • FOUR - Friendly people -- that just want your money.
  • THREE - Beautiful people that age very slowly (compared to typical westerners) -- that just want your money.
  • TWO - You can be 60 years old, fat, and ugly, and get a date -- if you have money.
  • ONE - You can be 70 years old, fat, and ugly, and still get a good-looking date -- if you have money.

Okay, this is a VERY cynical view of life in Thailand -- it really isn't that bad. In fact, the good far outweighs the bad. Of course, as with anywhere in the world, life is what YOU make of it.

Top Ten Reasons to Teach in Thailand

Thinking of teaching in Thailand? Here are some good reasons why you should consider it!

  • TEN - All the modern conveniences of home. Though Thailand insists it is still a developing country, you still have all the modern amenities you would expect from living in a western city.
  • NINE - Cheap food. If you like Thai food, you'd be in heaven! You can spend as little as 20 Baht (US$.50) for a decent Thai meal on the streets. Or, if you prefer dining in, even Western joints are reasonably cheap. A McDonalds meal goes for about 80 Baht (US$2).
  • EIGHT - Relatively high pay and low cost of living. Qualified teachers working at even a small international school make about ten times the average Thai salary.
  • SEVEN - Clean air out in the country or down at the beaches.
  • SIX - Anonymity. You can start a whole new life even after screwing it up in the west.
  • FIVE - The weather. According to meteorologists, Bangkok has the lowest, year-round temperature variation among all world capitals. Typically, lows are in the mid-20's and highs in the lower to mid 30's.
  • FOUR - Friendly people. Especially outside of the city.
  • THREE - Beautiful people that age very slowly (compared to typical westerners).
  • TWO - You can be 60 years old, fat, and ugly, and get a date.
  • ONE - You can be 70 years old, fat, and ugly, and still get a good-looking date.
